Interact with OLT! (and us!)

During the online conference week, join us for interactive and engaging activities that we have designed to really bring home the learnings of Online Learning Theory.  Whether you want to take part at your own pace (with Josh's Quizlet and Andrew's meetingwords pad) OR want to try something live and fast with Kate (in a Twitter #chat and Periscope livestream) - we have your learning style covered!

We hope you will take part, and enjoy!

                                                                           - Andrew, Josh, & Kate

Constructivism Activity

CONSTRUCTIVISM ACTIVITY  w/ ANDREW!

When?     - All week!

Where?   - A specially made meetingwords pad!

Objective:

To look at the impact Constructivist Theory can have on the practice of online learning.

Instructions:

1. Please read the information on the Constructivism page titled “What is Constructivism?” and “Implications of Constructivism on Online Learning Theory”

2. Next, read this brief article entitled “Developing online discussion forums as student centred peer e-learning environments”. Take particular note of Figure 1 and 2 included below.

3. Once completed, head on over to our meetingwords pad!

Similar in format to a Google Doc. meetingwords.com allows for quick, easy synchronous or asynchronous composition accessible via a simple web address. Participants may choose to answer anonymously or adopt a tag name.

4. Use these critical thinking questions to guide your discussion.

  • Do you believe this to be a feasible model of online learning? Why or why not?

  • In what ways does this framework for online learning imply constructivist ideology?

  • Do you recognize any problems with this system or foresee any difficulties arising with a student-centred peer e-learning environment?

  • Place yourself in the role of the teacher in an online course. How would you go about stimulating meaningful discussion? What tools might you use? Would you choose to incorporate principles of Constructivism, Behaviourism, or Cognitivism?
